What to Expect After A Concussion?

A concussion may be the result of a blow, bump or jolt to the head, or by any fall or hit that jars the brain. This is an invisible injury that can disrupt the way the brain works. It can decrease mental stamina, as the brain must work longer and harder even to finish simple tasks. Concussions involve a lack of consciousness, but in the majority of concussions, loss of consciousness does not happen.

Concussion Danger Signs

In some cases, a dangerous blood clot may build up on the brain in a person with a concussion and crowd the brain against the skull. A patient should be visited in an emergency department right away if symptoms become worst and/or if the patient has: one pupil larger than the other, terrible headaches, seizures, neck pain, sudden behavior change, drowsiness, repeated vomiting, slurred speech, problems recognizing people or places, confusion, weakness or numbness in arms or legs, or if it’s hard to wake the patient up can’t or is less responsive than usual.

Concussion Recovery and Treatment

Almost 80 percent of concussions can be resolved over seven to 14 days, with an average of 10 days. If anyone has concussions should he or she should not return to sports or other physical activity sooner than one week from sustaining the injury.

The recovery of Concussion happens once the patient begins to improve physically including headaches subsiding. Post-concussion neurocognitive test scores have improved. During this phase, the patient can return to academic and athletic activity as directed by a health care provider. However, academic accommodations are also required during the recovery phase because the concussion may still have an impact on thinking, attention, focus, memory, learning speed, and mental processing.

The chronic phase happens in cases when the patient has more long-lasting (chronic) problems with cognitive function. If left untreated these problems have the potential to impact the patient’s life as a whole.
